Session
Led by artist Yuki Kéké Tam, S.C.R.A.P.S. is a 1.5 hour scrapbooking and co-working session that uses the archives of articule as physical material for exploring meaning-making and collective memory. Drawing from practices of DIY craft, trash art, and conversational gathering, the activity invites participants to reflect on the power of images and language of our past.
Tam will start the workshop with a 15 minute introduction of the current articule archive collection, sharing examples of administrative and programming materials that have been saved over the 47 years of articule’s history. Participants are also welcome to bring and share pieces of their own archival history, such as in stories, photos, and living ephemera (receipts, notes, lists).
Participants have one hour to cut, paste, and collage this material into new images, poetry, or paper structures. Ideas, samples, and tools will be provided. By contrasting the carefulness and attentiveness of archival handling with the brazenness and intuition of collaging, we mix traditionally high and low categorizations of print, examining it as a lasting technology of information sharing, and critiquing class divisions of printed matter. The emphasis of this activity is on play and process, allowing new meanings to surface with the juxtaposition of images, words, and ideas. Participants will also have the option of adding to a collective articule history collage that will be displayed in the articule office. This session foregrounds the poetic possibilities that emerge when sharing and nostalgia becomes sources of sustenance and warmth.
The workshop concludes with an optional conversation circle, where participants may reflect on their experience, share insights, and exchange collages if they choose. Tea and snacks will be provided.
