articule has the pleasure of inviting you to an artist talk with participative sewing activities, as part of Angela Marsh's research residency.
La Friche, Mile-End is an evolution of Marsh’s ongoing artistic investigation into our urban wild spaces, which entails the creation of a new “tapestry”, an artistic weed-seed bank, for which small wild plant and small human artifact fragments are collected from local urban abandoned lots and hand-sewn individually into the compartments of recuperated bubble wrap.
Visitors to articule are invited to participate in the creation of the piece. The project also involves the creation of an artisanal plant guide, consisting of drawings, photographs and inventories. It investigates the co-habitation of culture and nature in our post-industrial/commercialized abandoned lot landscapes, which can be seen as our contemporary urban-wild commons, suggesting possible reconciliations and other ways of creating place and connection.
Angela Marsh was born in 1974 in Montreal, raised in Toronto and has been living in Quebec City since 2008. She recently completed a Master’s degree in Visual Arts (with thesis) at Université Laval. She is interested in issues around ecology and feminism, pedagogy and art, and the fostering of the intimate via the presence of nature in the collective imagination. In 2004, Angela graduated from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/University of Toronto with a Master of Arts, with a program focus on aesthetics and art education. Angela began her studies in visual arts at the age of 17 at Central Technical School’s The Art Centre, in 2000 completed a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Toronto (minor in Environment and Society), and further developed her art practice at Toronto School of Art and Université Laval. Angela has exhibited her work in Quebec City, Montreal and Toronto.
