To consume, from the Latin consummatio: “The end of time, the end of the world.”
The Corpocalyptique project explores the various facets of overconsumption and the perfectionism it engenders. Perfectionism insidiously creeps into our daily decision-making. It drives us into a desperate cycle of overconsumption in an attempt to live up to an ideal—whether regarding our bodies, our environment, our actions, or even our thoughts. The importance we place on others’ perceptions blurs our boundaries with reality and leads this world to its downfall.
Despite the gravity of the subject matter, this choreographic work expresses itself at times with humor, at other times with empathy and tenderness. Some scenes exaggerate and ridicule the effects of overconsumption on humans, while others take the subject more seriously and envision a world rebuilding itself around care.
The performers walk, stagger, trip over one another, twist, sway, embrace, and gaze at one another. From the public space to the private space visible to the audience, they navigate between an automated physical apocalypse and the gestures of the living.
Artists
Danse To Go is a contemporary dance collective whose mission is to make dance accessible to a wider audience in unconventional settings that foster a sense of connection with the public. From 2013 to 2024, we toured Quebec with our show Danse de marché to explore not only contemporary dance, but also food and consumption.
Since our inception, we have created with a sustainable vision of art. We value the creative process just as much as the performance itself. In response to a society that pushes us toward overconsumption and performance, we do not want to produce simply for the sake of producing. Rather, we want to create out of necessity and remain attentive to the process, as well as to the people involved in the project.
The first excerpt from our new show, Corpocalyptique, was presented at the FAR in 2021, and new scenes are currently being developed.
