Giving Tuesday - articule’s 45th anniversary Fundraising Campaign

Dear Friends,

For 45 years, articule has been a key presence in Montréal’s arts community, and we exist thanks to the generosity and dedication of you, our community. As we celebrate our 45th anniversary, we approach this season of giving with an open heart, inviting you to help us raise $4,500 to celebrate articule’s 45th year – and we can’t do it without artists, cultural workers, and supporters like you, who value the power of the arts!

articule was founded in 1979 by a group of young artists who rented out a space on rue de la Montagne to create a multidisciplinary venue for artistic research and experimentation. Over the years, articule has lived in several locations, including 4060 Saint-Laurent, 4001 Berri, and 262 Fairmount, and has resided at its current location on the Plaza St-Hubert since 2020. From its inception, articule has remained committed to bilingualism, collaboration, and participatory management. This has evolved into articule’s current state – a space for critical reflection both in its programming and internal structure – with a Basis of Unity that guides our every action to build an anti-oppressive future in the arts and beyond.

This past year, we were proud to bring an incredible variety of projects and activities to life, including:

  • Montreal Monochrome, our annual conference organized by articule's Fabulous Committee (anti-oppression), celebrated its 10th anniversary! Montreal Monochrome addresses the misrepresentation and under-representation of Indigenous and racialized people in the current Montreal arts scene.

  • Our project partner Super Boat People, in collaboration with Concordia University's Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling, ran a series of 8 workshops enabling a cohort of ten participants of Cambodian, Vietnamese and Laotian origin to reclaim their past. This project culminated in a final exhibition, What Travels Through Us / Ce qui nous traverse, which ran throughout the month of June, which showcased the work of the participants’ projects.

  • Through our Solidarity Series we were able to give our space for free to community organizations and artists to create timely events such as Birds of Gaza, A Walk Along the Shore, and Solidarity Sema in response to current events.

  • We continued our partnerships with Af-Flux and Ada X to host performances by Kim Ninkuru & Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre as well as a day of universally accessible activities  by Ă€ nos prothèses as part of HTMLLES Festival

  • We showcased a diverse range of long-term and short-term exhibitions in our gallery space, including HOST by Yen-Chao Lin et Justine Skahan, Anti Limites: Re Imagining the City from the Edges, Landbeing by Leeay Aikawa, Kristi Chen et Akash Inbakumar, and many more! Please see our past events page to see a full list of our past exhibitions.

Why we need your support

In 2024, rising inflation and funding cuts have created significant financial challenges for many artist-run centres. Your contributions to this campaign will directly support essential projects and initiatives that ensure articule can continue to serve our community, including:

  • Increasing our capacity to serve the D/deaf community by incorporating LSQ and ASL interpretation at every event—a goal we are striving to achieve through this fundraiser, as well as by strengthening our outreach and promotional efforts to ensure that our programming reaches those who would benefit most from these services.

  • Expanding MontrĂ©al Monochrome to a larger scale, enabling us to better serve BIPOC cultural workers from MontrĂ©al and beyond. In 2025, we would like to increase our outreach to BIPOC cultural workers across so-called Canada in order to expand networks of community and solidarity.

  • Increasing workshops for members that offer opportunities for skill-sharing, collaboration, and professional growth for our member artists of all levels and backgrounds.

  • Facilitating more timely and responsive Solidarity events, allowing articule to act quickly in supporting urgent social justice issues and amplifying marginalized voices within our community.

  • Investing in our long-term future, with plans to eventually relocate to one of articule’s previous homes, the 4001 Berri Building in 2029, to ensure that articule has the space and resources to continue growing and supporting the artistic community for decades to come.
