Code : Body | HTMlles Festival  Lesya Nakoneczny (Montréal) Laura Acosta + Santiago Tavera (Montréal)
03 Nov 2018 to 02 Dec 2018

A collaboration between Studio XX and articule.

In the context of the HTMlles Festival, articule co-presents the exhibition Code : Body from November 2nd to December 2nd, 2018.

Code : Body is an exhibition about how the body is monitored, bullied and constrained, forced to stay within the limits dictated by white patriarchy. From virtual reality to digital photography, each artist counteracts these codes in order to give agency to people who are ignored, yet whose bodies remain controlled. The process-based photo installation Untitled (Men Responding) by Lesya Nakoneczny is concerned with the objectification of women in social media and gender inequalities in the cultural industry. Laura Acosta and Santiago Tavera present The Novels of Elsgüer (Episode 3) - Live Despecho, an immersive installation about how migrant bodies and their multiple representations yearn to belong.

Lesya Nakoneczny is an artist based in Montreal. Her work considers identity, the psyche, and interpersonal relationships through an intermedia practice based in video, photography, performance, and sound. Gender, sexuality, and the uncanny are secondary exploratory pathways in her practice. Contemplative, figurative, and gestural, her work serves as a springboard for discussion on the representation of women in media, identity politics, and the feminine experience in a contemporary world.

Santiago Tavera and Laura Acosta are Colombian-Canadian transdisciplinary artists based in Montreal. Stemming from their experiences of migration, their collaboration explores the notions of displacement, belonging, and self re-presentation. Their collaborative practice presents a combination of material, corporeal and digital mediums. Through this, they intend to focus on technology’s capacity to expand a subjective narrative, abstract it, and make it interactive. Their work merges multimedia installations, immersive 3D and VR graphics, storytelling, experimental soundscapes, performance, and textile practices.
