Monitor 12: Figures Pointing Outside the Frame
Monitor 12: Figures Pointing Outside the Frame  |  11/24/2017 - 19:00

articule is pleased to present SAVAC’s Monitor 12: Figures Pointing Outside the Frame, a video program co-curated by Toronto-based curator/artist Oliver Husain as well as Jakarta-based programmers at ARKIPEL International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, Otty Widasari and Yuki Aditya. Following Monitor 11’s program These Monsters are Real, this marks the second year that SAVAC invites a local curator to collaborate with international curator(s).

Figures Pointing Outside the Frame presents works that consider the peripheries of the image and the content within as equally significant. Whether film, video, or a still image, the technology dictates the parameters of the frame. Decisions an image-maker makes regarding the composition, duration, performance, and location further contribute to a viewer’s experience....

arrow_rightLetter Writing with EMILIA-AMALIA
05/04/2018 - 15:00

Letter Writing with EMILIA-AMALIA Zinnia Naqvi (on behalf of Emilia-Amalia collective) Letter writing workshop free Letter writing has always been a political act: whether affirming admiration for an artist or activist, providing support to friends and colleagues, collectively voicing dissent and demanding change, or responding to world events in the editorial pages, the letter is a form that lends itself to feminist strategies of protest, collaboration, knowledge-sharing and world-building. For this session, as part of Montreal Monochrome VI, we would like to consider letter...  - Montréal Monochrome VI: Sanctuary City? | Discussion and Workshops

arrow_rightBirds Crossing Borders (Khadija Baker )
05/03/2018 - 20:00

Birds Crossing Borders Khadija Baker Interactive presentation free For refugees and people who seek safety, borders are critical as they are essential to access this feeling. Safety will then shift according to the lived experiences of the past place, especially ones that are violent, and especially for those who have lived it. Borders are less relevant not because they are crossed but because the place is not at the center anymore: it is access to society, and to connect, which allow feelings of certainty that usually come with feelings of belonging. A live performance to tell...  - Montréal Monochrome VI: Sanctuary City? | Discussion and Workshops

04/20/2018 - 19:00

Black Radical Imagination is a film showcase programmed by Jheanelle Brown and Darol Olu Kae, and is originally co-founded by Erin Christovale and Amir George. Black Radical Imagination stems from a series of discussions around the boundaries and limitations that are historically given to people of color. The filmmakers and artists in this year's program unflinchingly contend with Black suffering, resist spectacle and render traumatic histories, both personal and collective, without reinforcing...  - Black Radical Imagination | Special projects

04/19/2018 - 19:00

DEAVANAH/دیـــــــــــــــوانـــه remembers an event that occurred in the past, in one language, as it unfolds in the present, in another. The two are only ever consolidated in the state of lunacy, while the deav (demon) in deavanah (lunatic) attests to the right of the alien to bestiality. Gelare Khoshgozaran is an interdisciplinary artist and writer working across video-installation, performance and writing. Born and raised in Tehran and living in Los Angeles, she envisions the city as an imaginary space between asylum as 'the protection granted to a political refugee' and 'a...  - Gelare Khoshgozaran | Special projects

04/06/2018 - 19:00

MIRROR : MIROIR articule Members’ Show 2018 Mirror mirror, tell me... Who is articule? Over the past few years, the members of articule have been reflecting on the practice of art-making as well as on the practice of self-reflection in the context of marginalisation. Discussions on the concept of community, safe spaces, and on self-awareness are necessary for such types of reflection. In the spirit of initiating an exercise of collective discussion, the theme of articule's 2018 Members' Exhibition will focus on self-reflection as well as a reflection of the...  - MIROIR : MIRROR | Exhibitions

Featuring the work of seven artists, Art Crush in Time focuses on the performative nature of mark making. Through the exploration of a variety of notational systems in painting, sculpture and performance, the exhibition informs a corporeal understanding of human movement in places. The pieces selected reveal an emotional analysis of the dialogue between the body and the spatial constructions around it. By offering an...  - Art Crush in Time (Art Matters Festival) | Exhibitions
